A New Generation...Well the scheduled release date of The Sims 3 has now been announced for February 20th 2009.
The full press release can be read here: http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/080820/20080820005291.html However it looks like there will certainly be a continuation of offering pre-order and exclusive bonus items to a select few. 
"The Sims 3 Collector’s Edition will also be in stores on February 20, 2009. The Sims 3 Collector’s Edition will include the full game along with additional collectable The Sims merchandise and a bonus in-game Italian-Style Sports Car unavailable elsewhere. A limited number of copies of The Sims 3 Collector’s Edition will be available worldwide, and those who pre-order the product from select retailers will receive an additional exclusive in-game vintage sports car and a collectible poster that is a first look at the neighborhood, all available while supplies last." So it looks like we'll have to continue to collect these rare goodies in the next generation of The Sims. (As if any of us thought that we wouldn't have too...  )

Generally though that's just because I always like to have the best released edition of any game series that I like or I'm very interested in. (Provided the price isn't absurd, of course. )
So hopefully I'll be able to acquire the Collector's Edition, however it'll be interesting to see just how easy it is to share such exclusive content in the The Sims 3. Just considering that they wish to allow people to download extra content off of a new website similar to www.thesims2store.com , I'd assume that they would make it hard for such content to be easily transferred from one person to the next. However this is EA we're talking about and they're full of surprises... So no-one will know for certain until the time of The Sims 3's release.
